Renewable is slowly taking important place. The price of Solar PV which was like $100/Wattpeak when I started work on the use of solar cells for water pumping in Sri Lanka in 1971. Now the prices have dropped to Almost $1/Wp from Nanosolar and Firstsolar produces at a cost of $0.80 in Malaysia and sells now at $2/Wp. We have in Sri Lnka water pumping with 500Watts solar panel for a rural village. Replacing the unsafe poluting Kerosene lamp by modern 2Watt solar PV based LED 2W lamp is enough light for a rural home and this type of systems are avoidable for IndRs1,100 from Dlight in Delhi http://www.dlightdesign.com/ for Rural homes and Lamps from China are available at $25 with same specs at www.sunvis-solar.com
Please see http://www.pv-tech.org/news/_a/eipa_photovoltaics_market_topped_5.5gw_in_2008_129_growth_y-on-y/ and now there are power plants of the size 60MW in Spain
FIRST PILOT PROJECT OF "SOLAR VILLAGE" TAKES OFF IN SRI LANKA

The first solar village cluster in Sri Lanka has been established to accelerate economic development of the rural population. A solar water pumping system has been installed in Kaduruwewa in the Kurunegala district, ably guided by APSL stalwart Prof. I M Dharmadasa, and supported by the Helasarana organisation. The pumping system provides about 500 watts of power to pump clean water from a closed well to 125 village homes via a storage tank. The infrastructure for the water supply system was built by the "World Vision" programme and villagers in the area.

The solar village concept was the brainchild of Prof. Dharmadasa. As the co-ordinator of DFID (Department for International Development) funded and British Council managed link programmes, he worked with six local universities to build capacity for solar energy research, and promote clean energy technologies for poverty reduction and social development. Led by Dr. Krishan Deheragoda from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, a team consisting of final Geography students will be carrying out research and supporting the local community as part of their final year projects.

Dr. Deheragoda and Prof. Dharmadasa have had initial discussions with the Environment Minister, Mr Champika Ranawaka and Mr Rathika de Silva, Vice President of Sustainable Development at Holcim (Lanka) to replicate similar projects around the country. Twelve such projects will follow under "Green Villages" or "Haritha Gammana" concept with the experience gained from this first "Solar Village" pilot project. Visit Dharme’s Blog on our APSL web site for more information on renewable energy and related research & development.
When more prople atart using these facilities more the reduction of price and we hear that Clinton foundation is trying to fund a 500MW Concentrated Solar project in India which will generate power at a cost of Ind Rs 4/kWh with carbon credit etc.

Hey Rajiv,

It was nice to hear from you. First of all, I saw 10Rs/ KWh on MNRE website, but not sure of IREDA and 13 Rs. Anyways, I am also one the fellows waiting for CSP to get developed. I talked to a person in GEDA, and came to know, that their 10 MW limit is already given away at 10 Rs. So, it must be profitable (assuming people who put the tenders are not stupids, and I am sure they are not). So, now I am little disappointed with that, because price below 10 Rs. is not good price to get in. So, let's see. So, what are you doing these days, to push up these sectors.
Thanx.

Hey Rajiv, your profile seems to be interesting, so I thought to contact you. I am graduate student (Plz don't ask my major, it has nothing to do with this community, I am biotech major) in NY. But, I am also a fellow seeking a business in this industry. I am specifically more interested in CSP industry in India. Let me know, what are you upto these days, so we can get some fruitful discussion.

Thank you Rajiv. As my first friend I extend thanks and I look forward to learning more about this network group and how to navigate through it. I appreciate a perspective that is global and that focuses on concerns that lie in all of our backyards.

Hi Rajiv,

Dwayne Lawrence recommend me to contact you.
I am currently researching feed-in tariffs in India for my master thesis. As India is a very interesting market, not only because it is emerging, but also due to its great location I would like to find out whether there are feed-in tariffs (also called Power Purchase Rates) for solar energy. If possible I would like to get the written law for solar energy feed-in tariffs with all the numbers, so that I have something to back-up my research. I not only interested in PV but also CSP support by the government.

Thank you very much.
I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Hello Rajiv,
Sorry for not responding earlier! Somehow I seem to have completely missed your last message until right now. I would be happy to discuss my work more with you more and I am also eager to know more about your work in renewable energy in India. Do you have a website, and do you use skype, by any chance? Also, here's my personal email address: pbandyop@umich.edu. It might be easier to communicate via email so kindly send me yours as well.

Dear Rajiv,
Thank you for writing. It is exciting to connect with people involved with renewable energy in India because I am eager to pursue projects in that part of the world once I complete my MBA. I have looked at your LinkedIn profile and am eager to chat with you to learn more about your work, and also give you a better idea of how I am involved with renewable energy and the unique program I'm connected with in the US. I have a relatively rudimentary LinkedIn profile if you wish to look at it: http://www.linkedin.com/in/pbandyop

Priyanka
