Hi Kaushal,
Where do you intend to setup the prototype plant at in India?

Dear Kaushal,
I am working on a basic concept of use of CSP as a source of heat for a district cooling chilled water plant with absorption chiller, thermal storage (ice) and air-cooled heat rejection condenser. Once I get capacity parameters of CSP from manufacturers, I can firm up the parameters and size other componets and work out a tentative cost a module of 5000 TR capacity to check commercial viability of the concept. Electrical power will still be required for normal MEPand for chilled water primary pumps and not for back-up. The back-up source of heat would be identified on case to case basis . If cooling water source is available, then water cooled condenser together with cooling tower would replace air-cooled condenser. I have contacted a CSP manufacturer for capacity parameters and costing.

Sunil C. Karandikar

You are doing a wonderful job. I would like to know more about the prototype plant and whether it would be built?

After the announcement of the Solar Mission, we are in the process of preparing a note which would be put up to the mission for their consideration.

Nothing specific and concrete is there at present, but we hope in a couple of week's time we should be able to finalise our points for the mission.

Dear Rohit,

I believe 2017 is too far, to make 1000 MW solar power, if government supports us a little, I am sure, companies like IndianOil can achieve it easily within 5-6 years. And, I am sure, the extra electricity produced from those plants, will help to sustain our growing (and unsteady inflationary) economy.
So, I would like to ask you, that what are your expectations from government. Are you seeking fixed feed-in tariff, if yes, how much? I hope I am not breaking into the issue of confidentiality, but I guess by sharing we might be of help to each other.

Dear Kaushal,

Its the same case for all the states which receive high solar radiation like Rajasthan, Gujarat, Haryana, West Bengal. All have already tied up for their 10 MW quota.

We have had a number of discussions with MNRE for enhancing the quotas, but till now there is no positive response.

Yesterday only, our Prime MInister has announced the road map for National Action Plan on Climate Change. Apart from others, the roadmap says that minimum target of 5% renewable energy for power grids to procure on competitive basis and 1000 MW solar power by the end of 12th Plan (2017).

I think with this roadmap, some concrete decisions should be forthcoming soon which could provide a stimulus for CSP growth in India.

We are presently watching the devlopments on the policy front and waiting for the right opportunity.

Personally I am no expert in CSP technology, but in the last couple of months, I have gone through a lot of research papers and articles on CSP to make myself aware of the hapenings in this field.

Dear Kaushal,

I have just joined this forum. We in IndianOil are seriously contemplating enterring the Solar Thermal Electricity business in a big way. Considering that at present there are no real support from the Government by way of long-term assured feed-in tariffs for large sized plants, there are a few hiccups for starting such a venture.

The present incentive of feed-in-tariff of Rs. 13/- is for plant size of max. 5 MW only.

From your profile, it seems that you all are planning to build a small prototype plant based on CSP technology. Can you share some details regarding its size, location, approx. cost and of what CSP technology.

My e-mail is dawarr@iocl.co.in, and hope to hear from you soon.
